Canada’s participation in the third edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup came to an end after a 1:2 quarter-final defeat to Korea DPR. Canada conceded twice in the final quarter of an hour before pulling one back in added time. Canada’s final push was not enough before it was eliminated from the final eight of the competition.
Canada’s final match of the tournament was played at 8KM Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan on 4 October 2012. Canada’s final ranking at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Azerbaijan 2012 will be determined after the tournament concludes on 13 October. Still to be played, there will be a pair of quarter-final matches on 4 October, the two semi-final matches on 9 October, and the match for third place and final on 13 October.
In four matches, Canada posted two wins, one draw and one loss. In the group phase, Canada drew 1:1 with Nigeria before winning 1:0 over Colombia and 1:0 over Azerbaijan. The fourth and final match was a 1:2 loss to Korea DPR.
The 16-team FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Azerbaijan 2012 runs 22 September to 13 October in Baku (five venues) and Lankaran. This year’s tournament features players born 1995 or later. Since the tournament was inaugurated in 2008, Canada has participated in all three editions of the biennial tournament. Along with the biennial FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup (which will be played in Canada in 2014), Canada has participated in eight of nine FIFA’s world youth women’s tournaments.
